Juba Water Prices Soar

May 27, 2023 – Juba, South Sudan. Despite the March, 2023 implementation of a new water treatment plant in Juba, funded by the Japanese government, transport water costs are soaring in Juba. Most Juba residents get their water delivered from the Nile River. Drums of water that cost 1,000 pounds just a few short weeks ago, are now selling for 1,500 pounds per drum. Many residents blame inflation and the value of the South Sudan pound relative to the U.S. dollar. Others, including the drivers, blame police and charges being levied for transport through the city. In either case, it is a serious problem and one the South Sudan government is struggling to resolve.
