South Sudan – Ethiopia Highway
May 19, 2023 – Juba. Today Ethiopia and South Sudan leadership signed an agreement to construct the Paloch – Mathiang – Maiwut – Pagak Highway. Presently, this route is dirt, and susceptible to flooding during the rainy season. No time frame for completion was disclosed.
The agreement was signed by the State Minister of Finance of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and the Republic of South Sudan’s Finance Minister.
The highway will provide significant opportunity for future economic development, by providing a more reliable route for the trade of petroleum and agricultural products. During the ceremony, the country representatives exchanged views on enhancing infrastructure development, including electricity, oil pipelines, and other components that accelerate regional economic development.
It is reported that the President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, witnessed the signing ceremony for the construction of the highway which will connect North Eastern South Sudan with Western Ethiopia.
