UN Proposes Humanitarian Response
May 17, 2023 – New York. The United Nations has developed a $2.6 Billion response plan to assist the people affected by the fighting in Sudan. According to the UN, more than half of Sudan’s population is in need of humanitarian aid and protection. Additional aid money is needed to assist those fleeing to neighboring countries.
The leadership of Sudan’s neighbors, including President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan have offered to serve as mediators, to assist Sudan’s warring generals find a peaceful solution to the bloody conflict which broke out in mid-April. South Sudan is very dependent on Sudan for the delivery of its oil production. All export pipelines run through Sudan to the Red Sea, and 90 percent of South Sudan’s revenue depends on the continued operation of this pipeline. Disruption of this oil flow would be a catastrophic event for South Sudan’s economy.
